FDA Warns That Kratom Has "Deadly Risks"

I just came across a new story about kratom on the CNN website. From the story:

"It's very troubling to the FDA that patients believe they can use kratom to treat opioid withdrawal symptoms," FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb said in a statement. "There is no reliable evidence to support the use of kratom as a treatment for opioid use disorder."

Gottlieb pointed to reports of 36 deaths associated with kratom, as well as a tenfold increase in calls to US poison control centers about the substance between 2010 and 2015. Gottlieb said kratom has been associated with "serious side effects like seizures, liver damage and withdrawal symptoms." In addition, he said, kratom can be laced with other pain medications, like hydrocodone, contributing to opioid addiction.

  • Thank you for sharing this. people need to know the risks!
  • I’m on day 4 of Kratom withdrawal and I feel horrible. I heard about it on a opiate withdrawal website. It’s supposed to help get off opiates the “natural” way. Kratom IS an opiate. Don’t believe otherwise. You’re just trading one addiction for another. I can’t wait until they make it illegal. I believe the day is coming!
  • @Susan0825 hello and welcome. i'm sorry you're going through withdrawal, but i am glad you're coming off kratom. i don't know much about the drug, but have heard all sorts of things about it. we'd love to hear more of your story if you feel like sharing....

sending you healing vibes...praying for speedy detox for sure!!
  • It sucks that you're going through kratom withdrawal, @Susan0825. But the silver lining is that you're on Day 4 and things will get better. But, yeah...I hear ya about trading one addiction for another. Just because it's "natural" doesn't mean it's good for you. I wish more people would understand that.

Praying that you feel a whole lot better sooner rather than later. Thank you so much for coming here and sharing your experience. Hopefully, it will help others think twice before trying something like kratom for opiate withdrawal.
