Using lifestyle changes to cope with anxiety?

Anxiety is something that I have suffered with now for a long time, but one thing that I notice really makes a difference is making changes to my lifestyle - including improving my diet and doing more exercise, drinking more water, and getting enough (and also not too much) sleep.

Does anyone have any experience with this type of thing, who can confirm that it really just work and I'm not just imagining the improvements in myself? I do feel a lot healthier, and I know that I will carry on trying to change my lifestyle to improve my condition in the future.

  • I don't think that you're just imagining it. Improved diet and exercise has been proven to help people, not just the ones with anxiety or those in recovery, but most people in general.

Anyway, I'm glad that you're feeling great. Keep up the good work.@GemmaR.
  • I do think positive lifestyle changes can greatly affect anyone, whether they're a recovering addict or suffering from any mental condition. Exercise, for one, releases endorphins which are the feel good hormones. And whenever I'm feeling anxious or stressed, I find that working out can help release those pent-up emotions. The same goes for other types of activities, even doing household chores can exhaust me but in a good way.

With regards to diet, eating healthy foods can balance our moods as well. Maybe it's because they have the nutrients needed by our bodies and brains as well. Maybe it's because they nourish us in a way that junk foods cannot. Whatever the reason is, I find that since I have started eating more fruits and vegetables, I've become more energetic and leaner at the same time.

So I don't think you're imagining these things! Exercise and a healthy diet can improve our physical health as well as our mental health.
  • @GemmaR lifestyle is very important and the better your lifestyle, the better you will feel!
  • Yes, making positive lifestyle changes definitely helps one cope with anxiety. In some cases, it's best to move away from the source of one's anxiety if that's possible. One thing I've learned is that you can't deal with anxiety if you keep on repeating your same daily routine.
  • I haven't had a experience with this but I'm pretty sure that it can helps, maybe your eating habits has to do with how do you perceive yourself and that is related with stress, and stress with anxiety, I guess. I'm not really sure but you should keep it that way, see how do you feel about it, only you would really know if it's working for you or not.
    Good luck!
