Food Addiction

I think this is one of the common addictions, I was suprised it wasn't listed as such. Does anyone suffer from this? I know I do. In fact, I would say it is the bane of my existence. it really wasn't until recently that I really recognized my problem with food as a true addiction. I would have said I was an "emotional eater." or an "overeater" However, truly it goes beyond that.

  • I don't have a food addiction myself but I certainly have moments in life where I turn to food as a source of stress relief or comfort. I can't imagine how difficult it would be to be truly addicted to food - a substance that we all need for survival, but at the same time something that people may have difficult controlling their intake of.
  • I don't really have a food addiction, I definetly have noticed that I tend to eat (and smoke) a little bit more when I'm stressed, but I don't think it's an addiction. I agree with you, as you've said is not a really common topic when it comes to addiction, people need to be informed about it in order to treat and prevent it.
I really hope that you get the help and support that you need through your jorney, if you need to talk to someone we're here for you.

    Good luck!
  • This might sound ridiculous but I think I might have some kind of food problem too. The thing is I don't put on weight easily as my metabolism is really fast, plus I'm also a pretty athletic person, nevertheless, that's the only thing stopping me from being probably morbidly fat. I pretty much spent all my money on food and overeating is the way I regulary eat. I'm 25 right now and I've ben noticing slight changes in my metabolism, which leads me to think this might turn into a real problem in the future.
  • @Robmom... There are many discussions about food addiction in the Food Addiction section of this forum. Here's the link:

  • OK Thanks, Dean I will have to check them out. I would say it is a fairly common addiction, but some people who think they are food addicts, really aren't and some people who think they are not food addicts really are. I think some use the term loosely.
  • I used to have a food addiction, more specifically to Mcdonalds. They used their chemicals on their foods in order to make it tastier and has been disgusting to find out more about their ways. Glad I stopped eating there.
  • I think parents could do better in educating kids about healthier lifestyles, at least for me that was the case. Growing up I just lacked guidance so before I noticed anything I've already formed a habit that was way more difficult to correct than it would have been to probably just prevent. Now I'm older and trying to correct my programming as much as I can but it feels like such a struggle each step of the way and I really sometimes wish I could have just had this particular problem off my list. That's why i try to be more involved with my nephews and nieces in hopes that the cycle wouldn't carry onto the next generation, but there's only so much I can do since they are not my kids.
  • I don't have a food addiction but I've had my fair share of emotional eating when stressed or broken-hearted. LOL. I'm quite obsessed with dark chocolate myself and will prefer to eat every chance I get. Is alcohol a food addiction? Because I've certainly had alcoholism.
