What to Ask when Choosing a Treatment Center

Choosing a substance abuse treatment center is a very important decision and usually is something that you know very little about. So, how do you know what to ask and what answers to expect? After all, this is your life on the line and quite frankly, most people only want to do rehab one time so you have to get it right the first time. Here are a few things that you should know before you commit to any facility.

Ask if they have on ground detox facilities. Detox is part of most substance abuse assessments and some facilities do not have the ability to detox clients at their location so you would have to go somewhere else and then when the detox is complete you would go back. This is fine for some but most prefer that everything happens in one place. Also, make sure that the detox is medically supervised because depending on the drug you are detoxing from, it could get complicated so you will want a medical staff that can not only monitor you but can also give you something to make you more comfortable.

Find out if the facility accepts your health insurance. If you don’t have insurance then inquire about payment plans or financing. Some rehabs are very pricey so you need to know if even a portion of your stay is covered. How much is covered will also determine how long of a stay you will be able to manage. Some insurance will only cover a couple week stay in rehab and others can last for months. The average stay is 30 days but the cost will ultimately determine the length of the stay.

Does the treatment center offer amenities and if so what are they? Are the facilities private or will you have a roommate? Will a chef cook your meals? Do they offer massage therapy, yoga, meditation? Do they have a pool? Can you bring your pet? Is there an exercise room? Are there off ground activities? What is their aftercare program like? These are all things you will need to know. If they do offer these things are there extra charges for them? Ask these questions and you will be off to a great start in choosing the best rehab facility.

  • I never used drugs but sadly I have many friends that did in the past and many of them are still on it. Considering how hard it is to go through this, choosing the apropriate institute is essential for a succesful treatment. In these cases, the cost should be the last thing to determine when it comes to choosing the one you feel is better.
  • I usually find the amenities in Rehab to be secondary to whether or not the Rehab offers treatment for co-occurring disorders or dual diagnosis. Dual diagnosis treatment centers typically implement proven therapies like cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, EMDR, etc that teach the addict to cope with their mental illnesses without the need for substances - http://greatoaksrecovery.com/choosing-top-dual-diagnosis-treatment-center/

It may also be important to ask whether or not the treatment center has an outpatient treatment center available for post residential treatment. Addicts often have a tougher time adapting to outpatient treatment immediately following a detox.
