Moving Forward After Porn Addiction

Porn addiction is much like any other addiction in the sense that some people will become addicted and some will not. Usually people who become addicted have some form of an emotional opening in their heart or their mind that allows for this addiction to take root and grow. Although porn addiction is serious, you can still overcome it with the right help and work your way towards recovery. Once you’ve recovered, you’ll need to move forward with your life. If you need a few tips on how to move forward, keep reading.

When you’re moving forward after porn addiction, you’ll need to make a plan for the immediate future for yourself. Plan on going to support groups and meetings. You don’t want to lend yourself to isolation during this time and if you don’t feel comfortable being open with close friends and family, you’ll still need support. In a support group, you’ll get the peer support you need from like-minded people who understand what you’re going through and accept you as well as respect your struggles.

Examine everything in your life that you know triggers your addiction. These triggers could be situations or other temptations that you’ll want to eliminate completely, at least for a period of time, before you can handle the stress without resorting to your addiction.

The next step is accountability. Hold yourself accountable, accept responsibility, and always be truthful. Accountability may mean you shut your cable TV off, trade in your smart phone for one that doesn’t have internet access, and/or installing blocking software on your computers. To hold yourself accountable, give your spouse or a close friend all your passwords so that they might check on you from time to time.

You’ll also need to heal relationships that are important to you. Whether it’s your spouse or your best friend, sibling, or parent that you may have hurt, it’s important to spend time rebuilding trust in your relationships and recovering the love you may have compromised. By following these steps you’ll build a solid foundation from which to build the next stage of your life.
