  • Good evening everyone,

I've been struggling with codeine addiction for around 14 years now and have had enough. Partly fuelled by the new over the counter codeine laws in Australia but mostly because I'm tired of this life I began tapering gradually early January and am finally free of the beast. I am incredibly proud but don't feel I can share as noone knew of my addiction...noone. It began many years ago after a back injury resulting in surgeries that weren't terribly successful. For the last two years I've been in significant pain with severe arthritis needing a knee replacement. It concerns me somewhat that when I have my knee replacement that opiods will be offered as pain relief. I have no idea how to handle it.

I feel so much better in so many ways but at the same time am really struggling with pain relief for my knee. I'd really appreciate any advice anyone could offer.

Many thanks for the opportunity to tell my story.
  • @RubyLou hello and welcome! thank you for sharing.

congrats on beating the monster!! so very proud of you!! by letting us know here, you are inspiring hundreds that come here to read posts.... so thank you for that testimony! feel free to share your story (longer version) here:

If it were me, when I was going to have surgery, I'd be honest with the dr. I'd tell him I was a recovering addict (no need to feel scared or ashamed)... and ask for a non-narcotic pain med. That would be me though, as I would not want the opiate in my system... but if I had to, I'd find someone to be accountable to. An addiction specialist, NA, or someone . The mind may try to play tricks in such cases, whispering how it would be no big deal, and so on. I'd want to be able to navigate that period of time with someone I would be honest with.

    HOpe that helps!

    Again, congrats!
  • @RubyLou... Welcome to the community! I'm so glad you found us and joined us from Down Under!

I understand the concerns you have regarding pain relief after your surgery. By all means, discuss your concerns with your doctor. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being 100 percent honest about your past and any worries you may have about pain meds. This is a very real concern for many, many people these days and doctors will be happy to discuss it with you.

I'm proud of you for being free from your codeine addiction. It's so wonderful that you took that step to make your life better. Feel free to come here and talk about your situation anytime. We are a safe place for you to share, and we will always listen without judgment.

Sending you lots of positive, healing vibes. And big hugs, too.
  • Hello everyone, how are you? Have you had a good weekend?
